One of my friends who came with us is a historian, and museums are something that these guys so truly love. So to keep him company, we went to the Salar Jung Museum, Hyderabad.
Salar Jung Museum, Hyderabad is amongst the three National Museums of India and is one of the best art museums having a voluminous collection of paintings, clocks, textiles, carvings, manuscripts, carpets, furniture and sculptures from more than 7 countries. Salar Jung Museum comprises of properties of Salar family heritage and is a house for the biggest collection of antiques by a single man. This museum displays highly prized artefacts from few civilizations of Egypt, North America, Japan, Persia, China, Nepal, India, and Burma.
Salar Jung Museum is a must visit if one has a craving for history and a craze to witness the collections from almost all parts of the world. The museum has a huge collection of more than 50,000 books and 43,000 artefacts. Only a few of these artefacts are displayed in the Museum, and yet there are about 38 galleries divided into the Indian, Eastern and Western spread on two floors.
The Museum is located at a very fine location-on the southern bank of Musi River which makes the overall environment very pleasant. It is a perfect place for enjoying a day-long learning about the cultures and the lifestyle of our ancestors. Not only does it house paintings and sculptures but also has the finest quality specimens in various metals and few other peculiar substances. We sat in the green lawns of the museum and just had a relaxed time while our historian friend went from one department to another looking for new things.
Talking about the collections of the museum, few Indian historical artefacts including the wardrobe of Tipu Sultan, famous paintings by Raja Ravi Varma, and daggers of Emperor Shah Jahan, Noor Jahan, and Jehangir are found there. Also present is Aurangzeb’s sword and a diamond gold tiffin box. Double-figure sculpture in wood and Veiled Rebecca statue are few other famous artefacts present at the museum.
Along with galleries for display, there are reference libraries, publication houses, and a chemical conservation lab. Famous western collections are of the Holy Quran present in different fonts and sizes, one written in gold and silver, etc.
Visiting Hyderabad is more fun and educational with visiting this museum. Salar Jung Museum has a crafty collection giving insights of the past rulers, their rise and downfall like of Napoleon and their lifestyles. As it is one of the National Museums, visiting it would count a fond memory.
